Union Cabinet okays data protection bill
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, which will be tabled during the monsoon session of Parliament, news agencies have reported. The bill aims to make entities like internet companies, mobile apps, and business houses more accountable and answerable about collecting, storage and processing data of citizens as part of "Right to Privacy". "The Cabinet has approved a draft of the DPDP bill. It will be tabled in Parliament in the upcoming session," the source said. The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to be held from July 20 to August 11. Earlier reports said that the draft of the digital bill is likely to be opened for public consultation. The government may propose getting AI and quantum computing under the gambit of the bill, media reports had said.
