In a unique turn of events, the Supreme Court has taken strong exception to the Indian Medical Association, plaintiffs in the Patanjali misleading ads case, over the comments made by the association’s president in a media interview.

IMA President RV Asokan is in the dock for his comments on SC’s criticism of the practices of private doctors. On April 23, the Court ordered IMA “to put its own house in order” concerning unethical practices.

In an interaction with PTI, Asokan reportedly said that it was “unfortunate” that the SC criticised the IMA. He added that the apex court’s “vague and generalised” statements have demoralised private doctors.

Asokan reported added that it does not behove the SC to take a broadside against the medical profession which after all sacrificed so many lives for the Covid war.

The comments were brought to the notice of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah by Baba Ramdev’s counsel, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi.

The Bench expressed its disapproval over the comments, terming them as “disturbing.”

Taking stern exception, the bench warned IMA that there will be “serious consequences” to these statements. “You have not covered yourself with glory. You will have to explain how you can decide what we can do,” SC told the IMA’s lawyer.

Asokan’s comments were in regard to SC’s criticism of the “petitioner organisation” whose members (private doctors) prescribe medicines that are “expensive and unnecessary.”
