Tesla vs Tesla: Elon Musk company sues Indian battery maker over name
Tesla Power USA a Gurgaon-based battery maker with global headquarters in Delaware has been sued for infringing trademark by the Elon Musk-owned EV manufacturer. The latter has accused the Indian company over the brand name Tesla, a nod to the 19th-century inventor Nikola Tesla. Musk's Tesla is incorporated in Delaware, United States and has accused the Indian battery maker of using trade names “Tesla Power” and “Tesla Power USA”.

The EV manufacturer in a hearing at the Delhi high court this week said that its Indian namesake had continued to advertise under the contentious brand name despite being served a cease-and-desist order.

The Indian company argued on the grounds that it was a battery maker with no intention to create electric cars. The judge has provided Tesla Power USA three weeks to submit written responses after it presented its defence document. Tesla, on its part, said that it notified its Indian namesake in 2022, but received no response in the matter, forcing them to follow up with a lawsuit. The EV manufacturer is in the midst of a massive downsizing, laying off some top executives and long-time employees of the company. Reports say that the entire Supercharging team at Tesla has been fired. The Indian namesake of the carmaker, according to its website, is on a mission to "offer the best quality batteries at affordable prices" and has launched India's first refurbished battery brand
