Google has failed to convince a federal judge in California to dismiss a consumer lawsuit accusing Alphabet of illegally using business agreements with major technology companies to edge out rivals in the online search market, global news agencies reported.
U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin declined to dismiss the core federal claims in the proposed consumer class action. The lawsuit, filed last year, alleges that the tech giant entered into agreements with mobile device manufacturers and other partners to maintain its dominance.
Google has denied any wrongdoing and had sought dismissal of the case. According to the plaintiffs, the company “locked up the search market by paying Apple, major Android smartphone makers, wireless carriers and browser developers,” ensuring that Google was set as the default search engine across devices and apps.
