Rejig in BBC India as per new FDI norms

After being raided by the Income Tax department last year, the India arm of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) has handed over its newsroom publishing license in India to 'Collective Newsroom', a private limited company set up by its former employees.

As per the new set-up, the company will produce all of BBC's digital content in India in seven languages: Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. BBC has also reportedly applied for a 26% stake in this private company.

It was reported in December last year that, BBC India will be restructuring its shareholding to comply with the Indian government’s guidelines for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). According to the norms, foreign holdings in digital news entities are limited to 26%. BBC ownned 99.9% of BBC World Service India.

Reports say that over 200 BBC India employees have been shifted to Collective Newsroom.
