Best ads of the fortnight: Air India's thoughtful gestures, EMotorad's 'Animal' connection

Indian adland has had a stellar February with great ads that blew our socks off with their creativity.

In the first half, we were impressed by the ad campaigns of Abhibus, Cadbury 5 Star, Henry Harvin Education, MyMuse and Swiggy. This time around, we are again treated to a delectable platter of ads, some clever some quirky. These commercials score in terms of not only their creative quotient but also their recall value.

Here's our pick of the best ads of the fortnight between February 16 and 29. As always, they have been listed alphabetically.

Air India

Air India's 'Safety Mudras' commercial brings together three formidable forces of the media world: Prasoon Joshi, Shankar Mahadevan and Bharatbala. The air carrier's new inflight safety video integrates safety instructions with mudras or dance expressions of Bharatnatyam, Bihu, Kathak, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Odissi, Ghoomar, and Giddha - from around the country. The ad can be best described as a love letter to India's art and culture.

EMotorad

Love it or hate it, you cannot ignore Sandeep Vanga Reddy's Animal. The superhit film not only captured the audience's imagination but also cemented its place in the hallways of India's popular culture. One of the most unforgettable characters to emerge from the film is Freddy, played to perfection by Upendra Limaye.

In an ode to the film, electric vehicle company, EMotorad spoofs one of the most memorable scenes from the movie while introducing its latest offering. Limaye reprised his role as Freddy and uttered his signature line: "Imagined in Bangalore; designed in Delhi; assembled in Pune. Atmanirbhar Bharat."

"It is essential to build a high recall value in every ad in order to qualify consideration," wrote EMotorad CEO Kunal Gupta about the ad.

Fevikwik

Some things in life are not reversible like death and Fevikwik Gel's adhesive power. The latter is unforgiving, leaving little room for mistakes; once stuck, there is no plying things apart. In keeping with human shortcomings and our tendencies for errors, Pidilite has offered an innovation -- a 30-minute window to rectify any mistakes. Ogilvy India illustrates it with a clever and quirky new ad that combines Pidilite's brand of humour with a real-world situation.

Pulse

Sweet-and-spicy candy Pulse has a big fan following in India. Perhaps, that's why the prospects of Saurabh Shukla holding on to the candy even if it means getting his hand stuck permanently in a jar seem believable. The ad reinforces the brand's foundational message, 'Pran Jaaye Par Pulse Na Jaaye' with a fun take on the extent lovers of Pulse can go to. The commercial has been conceptualized by Wunderman Thompson (Delhi).

Scrub Daddy

It was Yashraj Mukhate's viral tune that took Kokila Modi's infamy from the rasoda to across the world. In February, Mukhate ultimately joined forces with Modi to tackle another monster in the rasoda, the dirty dishes. The viral Shark Tank product Cif's Srub Daddy has finally reached India and the brand banked on the Mukhate-Modi virality to create an indelible impact. The ad thrilled viewers who enjoyed the brand's meta approach to bring the two together.

Rungta Steel

Often, celebrity-led ads are low-effort in terms of creativity, with brands and agencies banking on star power to do the magic. Rungta Steel's ads beg to differ in this respect. The ad has thrice the star power with the formidable trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. It is also creative and entertaining in its approach, using filmy allegories of the stars hit movies -- Raees , Gangubai Kathiawadi and Rockstar.
