Aamir Khan turns 59: A brand story of perfectionism

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is turning 59 today. The Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipient who also popularly goes by the sobriquet of ‘Mr Perfectionist’ has a net worth of around Rs 1,862 crore, earned through acting and various ventures like his own production house, endorsements, commercials, real estate and entrepreneurial investments.

According to a TAM sports report, the Laal Singh Chaddha actor emerged as the top celebrity endorser of IPL 2023, with a 10% share.  Reports say that he charges five to seven crores for each endorsement deal. Khan has been associated with soft drink brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi since the 90s. He starred alongside Aishwarya Rai and Mahima Chaudhury in a Pepsi ad back in the day, that is still fresh in the minds of several viewers.

He also played amusing characters in the Coke ads with the tagline "Thanda matlab Coca-Cola"?

Khan has also endorsed the Godrej Group in the past. He was featured in the company's ad campaign to describe Godrej products in interesting ways. In 2013, Godrej roped in Aamir as the face of the brand when the company launched an integrated campaign of “ideas that make life brighter.”

Khan who also endorsed Tata Sky as their brand ambassador in 2008, was described by Vikram Kaushik, the then CEO & Managing Director of Tata Sky: “Aamir makes a perfect fit with the Tata Sky brand values of trust, high-quality entertainment and innovation.” The statement defines how Aamir’s most creative and entertaining style of promoting brands stood out in the clutter of other brand promoters.

He appeared in a Samsung mobile some years back. Later on, he remained the face of the brand for several years.

Among some recent associations of Khan with brands are Charged by Thums Up, Dream 11, and PhonePe amongst others.

Thums Up

Charged by Thums Up from The Coca-Cola Company unveiled its new campaign "Mind Charged, Body Charged", featuring Khan and Darsheel Safary. Conceptualized by Ogilvy, the new Charged film featured Khan and Safary in a visually appealing narrative, with Khan portraying various avatars throughout the film in larger-than-life situations.

Dream11

Dream11 launched an advertisement featuring the famous 3 Idiots actors—Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi—along with multiple Indian cricketers. The ad '3 Idiots ka Press Conference Cricket Pe’ shows the three actors mocking the cricketers for their foray into acting through multiple TV commercials and in turn, announcing their plan to enter cricket.

PhonePe

Khan featured alongside Alia Bhatt in a series of campaigns for PhonePe. One of them was ‘Karte Ja. Badhte Ja.’ that was rolled out in 2020. The campaign was a series of 9 short episodic films conceptualised and created by Leo Burnett India.

The films featuring Khan and Bhatt were episodic with each episode breaking down a barrier between a sceptic and the believer. Playing the roles of a sceptic Inspector Desai - Aamir Khan and a savvy PhonePe user - Alia Bhatt, who with their playful banter and believable narrative teach something new and dispel a myth with each film, thereby nudging viewers to download the app. The campaign was aired during IPL 2020.

Khan's versatility, popularity and credibility as a public figure have made him one of the most sought-after actors for brands in the endorsement space. His quirky personality combined with his famed penchant for perfectionism has helped create instant recall for many brands in the Indian market.
