With this approval, GTPL becomes the second HITS licensee in India
GTPL Hathway Limited, a digital cable TV and broadband service provider in India, has officially received a license from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to operate Headend-In-The-Sky (HITS) services for a period of 10 years.
With this approval, GTPL becomes the second HITS licensee in India, marking a significant step in its expansion strategy.
The first company to receive a Headend-In-The-Sky (HITS) license in India was NXT Digital, a subsidiary of the Hinduja Group.
HITS technology allows broadcasters to transmit television channels via satellite to local cable operators, eliminating the need for extensive ground infrastructure.
This makes it an ideal solution for delivering content to remote and underserved areas, ensuring a wider reach and better quality transmission, sources said.
GTPL Hathway has been gearing up for this expansion, with reports from 2024 suggesting an investment of ?100 crore in the HITS platform.
The service is expected to go live in the first quarter of FY26, with the capacity to provide up to 900 TV channels to customers across the country, according to sources.
In a stock exchange filing today, GTPL said, “This is further to our letter dated July 12, 2024, intimating receipt of permission from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for providing Headend-In-The-Sky (HITS) Services, subject to fulfillment of the provisions contained in the HITS guidelines.
“Please note that the Company has complied with the requirements and has, on March 27, 2025 at around 3:30 p.m., entered into a Grant of Permission Agreement with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to establish, maintain and operate, for a period of 10 years, a HITS Broadcasting Services platform at Ahmedabad, Gujarat.”
