Mumbai BJP Chief and third-time MLA from Bandra West constituency Adv Ashish Shelar has been appointed Maharashtra’s new Minister of Information Technology and Cultural Affairs.
Shelar, who served as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Treasurer since October 2022, took oath last week as a cabinet minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led state government. Ministerial portfolios were officially assigned two days ago.
After becoming minister, Shelar stepped down from the cricket board. BCCI will soon begin its search for a new treasurer, with a special general meeting scheduled for January 12 to appoint replacements for both Shelar and Jay Shah. Shah recently transitioned from his role as BCCI Secretary to Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
A Supreme Court 2016 ruling, based on the Lodha Committee recommendations, had prohibited public servants and ministers from holding BCCI office. However, a constitutional amendment in September 2022 allowed MLAs to serve as office-bearers. Following this change, Shelar assumed the position of BCCI Treasurer in October 2022.
However, ministers are still barred from taking a post on the cricket board. Political Journey and Contributions. Humble and soft-spoken Shelar, who is an advocate by profession, is widely recognized for promoting cultural fusion and enhancing the social fabric of Bandra, a hub of diverse communities. Known for his passion for literature, art, and culture, Shelar has actively supported libraries, reading initiatives, and cultural preservation efforts to counter the adverse effects of excessive gadget use among youth.
“Shelar’s tenure as an MLA has been marked by his unwavering support for artists, exhibitions, and cultural festivals, organizing events that celebrate Mumbai’s unique heritage,” says Cheryl Misquitta, President of Bandra Gymkhana.
Early Career and Notable Roles
Shelar began his public service journey as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2012, earning a reputation as a diligent and committed leader. Over the years, he has held several key positions in the state government, including Minister of School Education, Sports, and Youth Welfare.
In 2019, under the administration of then-CM Devendra Fadnavis, Shelar served as the interim Minister for School Education, where he initiated reforms to enhance educational outcomes for Maharashtra’s youth.
