With the release of its most recent Transformers product, the Soundwave kit by LEGO is ramping up the noise.

This 1,505-piece buildable Decepticon, releasing exclusively at LEGO Stores on August 4, is more than just a cassette player. It talks.

“This is the first time a LEGO Transformer can actually speak,” said a LEGO designer. Adding to which, Senior Designer at the LEGO Group, Joseph Patrick said, “This set is a love letter to fans who grew up with the original Transformers.”

Unlike typical LEGO models, the latest Soundwave will transform from a robot to a cassette player without a need of disassembly, making it first-of-its-kind in the Transformers series. In addition to this, another key feature of the model is that after pressing the model's “play” button, pre-recorded lines and sound effects will be triggered.

“We wanted to go beyond just a display piece,” President of Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro, Casey Collins explained. “With the working cassette bay, transforming cassettes, and audio playback - this is Soundwave brought to life for the adult collector.”

The announcement instantly stirred up the excitement amongst fans especially over attention to detail. In robot mode, Soundwave stands 13 inches tall and includes his iconic cassette minions, Ravage and Laserbeak. Both transform into tapes that fit Soundwave's chest, a feature that is receiving positive feedback on fan forums.

“It’s like LEGO reached into my childhood and rebuilt it brick by brick,” one fan posted. The Soundwave set costs $189.99 and comes with posable joints, a rocket pod, laser blaster, a working cassette bay, and a collector display plaque. In addition, it is the first Decepticon to appear in LEGO's Transformers lineup, after Bumblebee (2024) and Optimus Prime (2022).
