The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), in collaboration with the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), E-Gaming Federation (EGF), and the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), has unveiled a Voluntary Code of Ethics for Online Gaming Intermediaries. This initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a safe, transparent, and user-centric gaming ecosystem in India.
The voluntary code aims to protect consumer interests, promote responsible gaming, and elevate industry standards. By signing the code, online gaming intermediaries pledge to act in good faith, ensure transparency, and prioritise user safety. The code is designed to complement existing laws without overriding them, offering a framework for self-regulation within the industry.
Under the code, online gaming platforms are encouraged to adopt measures that promote responsible gaming practices. These include providing users with information on responsible gaming, enabling self-exclusion features, allowing players to set time or spending limits, and conducting awareness campaigns. Platforms are also expected to leverage advanced technology to monitor player behavior and offer support to individuals exhibiting signs of risky gaming habits.
A critical aspect of the code is safeguarding minors. Real-money games are strictly prohibited for users under 18 years of age, with platforms required to prominently display age restrictions and verify users' age during registration. Should a minor's account be identified, immediate termination of access is mandated.
Fairness in gaming is another cornerstone of the code. Online gaming intermediaries must ensure transparent terms and conditions, publish clear game rules, and prevent deceptive practices such as bot usage. Regular audits are recommended to maintain compliance with these standards.
Financial safeguards form an integral part of the framework, requiring platforms to implement Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols and utilize recognized digital banking channels for transactions. The code explicitly prohibits cash or cryptocurrency transactions and mandates clear communication regarding platform fees, prize distributions, and refund policies.
Advertising guidelines outlined in the code emphasize truthful promotions that do not misrepresent winning probabilities or encourage minors to participate. Advertisements must avoid portraying gaming as a financial solution or an alternative source of income.
