Netflix dominated the Hindi direct-to-OTT films category while Disney+ Hotstar had the highest number of productions in the most-watched Tamil and Telugu OTT shows lists

Ormax Media released its latest report “Streaming Originals in India: The 2024 Story” looking at the top original shows and films released in 2024 in Hindi, International, Telugu and Tamil languages on three parameters: Viewership, Marketing Buzz and Content Strength.

With 15.1 million in viewership, Kriti Sanon and Kajol starrer Do Patti was the most-watched OTT film in 2024. Other Netflix productions in the list included Sector 36 (13.9 million), Sikandar Ka Muqaddar (13.5 million), Murder Mubarak (13 million), Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (12.8 million), Amar Singh Chamkila (12.4 million), Bhakshak (12.2 million), Maharaj (12.1 million), Wild Wild Punjab (10.9 million), CTRL (9.1 million) and Vijay 69 (7.8 million).

Prime Video’s Ae Watan Mere Watan (11.5 million) and Agni (9.1 million), and Disney+ Hotstar Bloody Ishq (11.2 million) and Patna Shuklla (9.8 million) were also among the most-watched Hindi direct-to-OTT movies in 2024.

Mirzapur S3 emerged as the most-watched Hindi web series with 30.8 Million viewership, followed by Panchayat 2 (28.2 million), Heeramandi (21.5 million), Indian Police Force (19.5 million), Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar (16 million), Citadel: Honey Bunny (15.9 million), Kota Factory S3 (15.8 million), Taaza Khabar S2 (15.3 million), The Legend Of Hanuman S5 (15.2 million), Mismatched S3 (14.7 million), IC814: The Kandahar Hijack (14 million), Call Me Bae (13.6 million), Showtime (12.5 million), Gullak S4 (12.1 million) and Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein S2 (11.5 million).

Among the Telugu productions, Save The Tigers S2 topped the list with 5 million viewership, followed by Kalki 2898 AD’s animated prequel, B&B: Bujji & Bhairava (4.9 million). Disney+ Hotstar led the top 10 list with 4 productions. 

The Rana Daggubati Show (4.2 million), #90’s - A Middle Class Biopic (3.8 million), Unstoppable With NBK (3.1 million), Miss Perfect (3.1 million), Agni Sakshi (2.8 million), Special Investigation Team (SIT) (2.8 million), Bhamakalapam 2 (2.7 million) and Harikatha: Sambhavami Yuge Yuge (2.6 million) were also among the most watched Telugu shows and movies on OTT in 2024.

Prime Video’s Inspector Rishi was the most-watched Tamil show on OTT in 2024 with 4.9 million viewership, followed by Disney+ Hotstar’s Heart Beat (3.3 million). Disney+ Hotstar led the top 10 list with 7 productions. 

Other top Tamil shows and movies on OTT included Goli Soda Rising (3.2 million), Chutney Sambar (3 million), Uppu Puli Kaaram (2.9 million), Kana Kaanum Kalangal S3 (2.8 million), Parachute (2.5 million), Pon Ondru Kanden (2.4 million), Thalaivettiyaan Paalayam (2.2 million) and My Perfect Husband (2.1 million).

The top content in the unscripted category for 2024 included a diverse range of non-fiction genres, spanning TV extensions, documentaries, game shows, and influencer-driven reality formats. JioCinema’s Bigg Boss OTT S3 topped the list with 17.8 million viewership. 

Other reality shows and documentaries in the list included The Great Indian Kapil Show S1 (15.7 million), Shark Tank India S3 (12.5 million), Ram Janmabhoomi - Return Of A Splendid Sun (10 million), Gaming Insaan (7.8 million), Playground 4 (7.4 million), Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale (7.4 million), The Tribe (6.7 million), Angry Young Men: The Salim-Javed Story (6.6 million) and Follow Karlo Yaar (6.5 million). 

With 19.6 million viewership, Squid Game S2 was not only the most-watched international original in India in 2024, but of all time. Established franchises dominated the top 10 list with 7 entries: The Boys S4 (10.5 million), The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power S2 (8.8 million), Emily in Paris S4 (7.5 million), House of the Dragon S2 (7.4 million) and Bridgerton S3 (6.5 million).

Fallout (7.7 million), 3 Body Problem (6.7 million) and The Perfect Couple (6.3 million) were also among the top 10 most-watched international originals in India in 2024. 

There were no breakout international films on OTT in 2024, with Prime Video’s Road House being the only one to cross the 5 Million viewership mark. Other movies in the list included Spaceman (4.8 million), The Idea of You (4.7 million), Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scaregiver (4.4 million), Federer: Twelve Final Days (4.3 million), Upgraded (4.2 million), Atlas (3.9 million), Damsel (3.7 million), This is Me Now: A Love Story (3.5 million) and Your Fault (3.4 million).

The report focuses on original content and doesn’t touch upon other “non-original” content on streaming such as theatrical films, catch-up TV, sports, etc.

The report also extended a special mention to “India’s Got Latent” on the YouTube channel Samay Raina. “The show would have comfortably made it to the top 3 list of originals in our report, if YouTube originals were considered,” the report noted.
