The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has initiated the formulation of rules to regulate online advertisements as per the revised Allocation of Business Rules, which were amended on July 28, 2023. This development was highlighted in the Demands for Grants (2024-25), presented to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on December 18, 2024.
According to the report, the MIB is actively working on these regulations, and the Parliamentary Committee chaired by Nishikant Dubey has sought regular updates on their progress. “The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is in the process of formulation of Rules for regulation of online advertisements as per allocation of Business. The Committee would like to be apprised of the status of formulation of these Rules for regulations of online advertisements,” said the Demands for Grants Report. The Central Government, through a notification on July 28, 2023, amended the 'Allocation of Business Rules,' expanding the ministry’s mandate and bringing online advertisements and content from online publishers under MIB.
The revised ‘Allocation of Business Rules ‘for the Ministry now cover digital and online media, including films and audio-visual content from online publishers, news and current affairs on online platforms, and online advertisements.
