Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, his company confirmed on September 4. He passed away at his home in Milan.
Armani, who co-founded his namesake label in 1975 with business partner Sergio Galeotti, built one of the world’s most recognisable fashion houses. The group today spans ready-to-wear, haute couture, accessories, eyewear, fragrances, interiors, and hospitality. Its annual revenues were reported at around Euro 2.3 billion in recent years.
Often credited with popularising the unstructured suit jacket, Armani reshaped men’s and women’s tailoring in the 1980s and became a fixture on Hollywood’s red carpet.
Beyond clothing, he expanded aggressively into licensing, creating a diversified portfolio under lines such as Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, and Giorgio Armani Privé.
Armani remained at the helm of his company until his death. His group has remained privately held, and questions about succession have circulated for years. According to earlier reports, control of the company is expected to pass to the Armani Foundation, which was established in 2016 to ensure independence and continuity.
In an official statement, the company said, “With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani. Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.” They added, “Over the years, Giorgio Armani has crafted a vision that expanded from fashion to every aspect of life, anticipating the times with extraordinary clarity and pragmatism. He has been driven by relentless curiosity and a deep attention to the present and to people. Along this journey, he established an open dialogue with the public, becoming a beloved and respected figure for his ability to connect with everyone. Always mindful of the needs of the community, he has been active on many fronts, especially in support of his beloved Milan.”
His family and employees will carry the Group forward in respect and continuity of these values.
