Apple has announced that John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, will be stepping down from his role and transitioning into an advisory position before retiring in the spring of 2026. At the same time, Apple has appointed well-known AI expert Amar Subramanya as Vice President of AI. He will report to Craig Federighi.
In his new role, Subramanya will oversee key areas such as Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. Other parts of Giannandrea’s organization will now report to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to better align with their existing teams.
Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, has been a major force behind Apple’s AI and machine learning efforts. He helped build a strong AI team responsible for Apple Foundation Models, search and knowledge systems, ML research, and AI infrastructure.
Subramanya brings extensive experience from his previous roles, most recently as Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he served as head of engineering for the Google Gemini Assistant. His deep background in both AI research and product integration will support Apple’s continued innovation and upcoming Apple Intelligence features.
“We are grateful for John’s leadership in shaping our AI strategy and helping Apple deliver meaningful innovation,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “AI has always been a core part of Apple’s vision. We are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s team and bring his exceptional AI expertise to Apple. Craig has played a key role in our AI work, including efforts to deliver a more personalized Siri next year.”
These leadership changes position Apple for its next phase of AI growth. With Giannandrea’s groundwork, Federighi’s expanded role, and Subramanya’s strong expertise, Apple is ready to advance its mission of delivering smart, trustworthy, and highly personal experiences. This marks an important new chapter as Apple strengthens its commitment to shaping the future of AI for users around the world.
