India’s public broadcasters Akashvani (All India Radio) and Doordarshan generated a combined ?587.78 crore from non-government advertising between 2022 and 2025, according to information presented in the Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan.
The revenue figure highlights growing monetisation efforts by the public service broadcasters alongside traditional government support. As part of wider reforms, the Government of India is modernising both Akashvani and Doordarshan under the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) Scheme (2021–26), which has an outlay of ?2,539.61 crore focusing on digitalisation, technology upgrades and expanded coverage.
To strengthen content quality and audience reach, Doordarshan has introduced a simplified Content Sourcing Policy and regularly launches new programmes produced by regional artists across languages. Technological upgradation has also expanded HD telecasts and digital presence through the WAVES OTT platform, plus integration with the Online News ONAIR mobile app.
Akashvani has diversified its offerings with audio-visual podcasts such as The Akashvani Podcast and Akashvani Originals, while structural reforms and broader broadcast modes including apps and social media are being leveraged to boost viewer engagement and revenue. These developments reflect efforts to strengthen India’s public broadcasting ecosystem in a competitive media landscape, driving non-government advertising growth in addition to core public service mandates.
