OpenAI has officially launched Sora, its advanced AI video generation tool, as part of the festive "12 Days of OpenAI" event that began on December 5, 2024. This initiative features daily announcements of new products and updates, with Sora being one of the most anticipated releases.
Currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in select countries, including India, Canada, Australia, and Japan (excluding the EU, UK, and Switzerland), Sora allows users to create hyper-realistic videos from text prompts.
In a blog post dated December 9, OpenAI stated, "We developed a new version of Sora—Sora Turbo—that is significantly faster than the model we previewed in February."
This enhanced version can generate high-definition videos lasting up to 20 seconds and supports various formats. Users can create up to 50 videos monthly at 480p resolution without additional costs for Plus subscribers.
The implications for the advertising industry are profound. With Sora, brands can quickly produce engaging video content tailored to their target audiences. This capability could reduce production costs and time significantly while allowing for greater creative experimentation.
As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted during the launch, "It's going to get a lot, lot better," indicating ongoing improvements that could further revolutionize how businesses approach video marketing.
However, the rollout hasn't been without challenges. High demand on launch day led to traffic issues, temporarily hindering access for eager users. OpenAI says it is committed to refining Sora’s capabilities and addressing concerns about misuse, particularly regarding deepfakes and misinformation. The company has also implemented safeguards to prevent harmful content generation while emphasizing responsible AI usage.
