Mega year for movies? 2024 releases cross the Rs 10,000 cr mark at the box office

2024 has been a blockbuster year for box office collections. Movies across languages have contributed big, pushing the cumulative gross collections to surpass the Rs 10,000 crore mark. Collections from the releases in the first 11 months stand at Rs 9,862 crore.

With Pushpa 2: The Rule raging across the country since its release in the first week of December, the collections have tipped over to cross the Rs 10,000 crore mark, states the November 2024 edition of the Ormax Media’s The India Box Office Report.

With big December releases on the slate, such as Baby John (Hindi), Mufasa: The Lion King (Hollywood), Viduthalai: Part-2 (Tamil), Barroz (Malayalam), and Max (Kannada), the box office collections will likely break the 2023 record of Rs 12,226 crore. Pushpa 2: The Rule is expected to add to this momentum significantly.

At Rs 664 crore, the Hindi Diwali releases in November 2024 contributed 73% to the month’s collections. These included strong performances by Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (Rs 305 crore) and Singham Again (Rs 290 crore). The two movies now stand at 4th and 6th positions in the top 10 list of the highest-grossing movies of the year (January to
November 2024).

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again also expanded the share of the pie for the Hindi releases from 34% to 38% at the box office collections. However, this remains lower than the 44% share achieved in 2023, states Ormax

Media’s report. Other languages stand at Telugu (19%), Tamil (17%), Malayalam (11%), Hollywood (8%) and Others (7%).

Kalki 2898 AD continues to be the highest-grossing movie of the year until November at Rs 776 crore, followed by Stree 2 (Rs 698 crore) and Devara Part - 1 (Rs 347 crore).
