NBF expands into NBDF, Expands Scope to Include Digital News Platforms

The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) has announced its expansion into the News Broadcasters & Digital Media Federation (NBDF) following its annual general meeting held in the Delhi NCR region. The transition represents a structural shift aimed at aligning the organisation with the growing convergence of television and digital news platforms in India, according to an official statement.

A major point of discussion during the meeting was the recent allegations of corruption and data manipulation involving the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). Members expressed concern over reports linked to the Kerala case, which include claims of kickbacks connected to an employee working out of BARC’s headquarters. The Federation noted that such incidents have serious implications for the credibility of television ratings and the overall audience measurement framework, which plays a key role in the functioning of the news broadcasting sector.

In a formal resolution, NBF stated that it would raise the issue directly with BARC, seeking clear corrective action, accountability measures, and structural reforms to ensure the ratings system remains independent and resistant to tampering. Members collectively agreed that restoring faith in the audience measurement process is a priority, and that protecting its integrity is essential for maintaining trust within the industry.

Alongside the concerns over ratings, the Federation confirmed its shift to NBDF, a restructured national body that will bring together television broadcasters, digital news publishers, and technology-driven news organisations under a single platform. The expanded mandate will cover policy advocacy, digital regulation, technology and platform governance, and industry coordination, reflecting the growing influence of digital platforms and changing audience consumption patterns. To maintain leadership continuity during the transition, all current office bearers and management members will retain their positions. The Federation stated that this would help ensure stability as the organisation adapts to its broader role and responsibilities.

With these developments, NBDF reiterated its focus on supporting transparency in audience measurement, addressing industry challenges, and representing the collective interests of both broadcast and digital news stakeholders at the national level.
