Sanjay Jaju, the new I&B Secretary: Bureaucrat who has been around several blocks

Sanjay Jaju, the new Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is a senior bureaucrat who has been in charge of several key roles in across sectors – from defence to highways to communications.

And now I&B as he takes over fromApurva Chandra.

Prior to this, the 1992 batch IAS officer from the Telangana cadre was Additional Secretary to the Department of Defence Production since 2018.

In his previous roles,Sanjay Jajuhas also been the Director of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation from 2014-2018.

Over the years, Jaju has earned the appreciation of being a dedicated and honest officer. His hard work and understanding of public service have got him several laurels in the government.

As Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh government in the Electronics, IT and Communications Department from May 2011 to October 2014, he was committed to promoting IT industrial investment in the state and its use in improving governance.

During September 2008 to May 2011, Jaju was Commissioner and Ex-Officio Secretary of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies Department where he managed the Food Economy besides providing Food security through the Public Distribution System.

He helmed relief and rehabilitation to families displaced due to big projects as the Commissioner for the Relief and Rehabilitation Department for four months in Hyderabad in 2008.

As Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh for one year, he developed physical infrastructure through Public Private Partnerships.

He was also the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad for two years from 2005 to 2007 with responsibilities to provide civic amenities and a holistic environment for over 8 million residents.

From October 2002 to May 2005, as Collector and District Magistrate of Andhra Pradesh he had regulatory developmental responsibilities.

In the beginning of his career, Jaju has contributed significantly as the Commissioner for Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam, Project Director for District Primary Education Programme in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Project Officer for Integrated Tribal Development Agency and IFAD Food Delivery in Parvathipuram, Andhra Pradesh and Sub Collector for Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Apart from a holding a Masters’ degree in technology from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, he is also a Cost and Management Accountant and has completed various certificate and diploma courses from Cornell University, Harvard Kennedy School, Duke University and the University of Manchester. He had also earned a fellowship in the India Leadership Initiative from Aspen Institute's Global Leadership Network.

  1. Gold Icon National e-Governance Award by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation in January 2018 for conceptualising, designing and implementing Project INAMPRO.

  4. Manthan Award for South Asia & Asia Pacific
  5. SKOCH AWARD for Best Project of National Significance
  6. Dataquest e-Gov Champion Award
  7. Gold Icon National e-Governance Award for process reengineering
  8. Stockholm Challenge Award
  9. Jaju has also published several blogs on Social Media, Democracy and the Digital India dream. He has been married to Jyoti Somani Jaju, a Project Director at International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and together they have a daughter, Naveli Jaju.
