JSW Paints has officially taken a 61.2% stake in Akzo Nobel India, completing one of the most significant acquisitions the Indian paints sector has seen in years. The move, which includes a 60.76% purchase from Akzo Nobel N.V. plus an earlier open-offer pickup of 0.44% from public shareholders, gives JSW a dominant position—and signals a shift in the competitive landscape. For JSW Paints, a relatively young but fast-growing player, this marks a major leap. The company now absorbs a legacy brand with strong roots in decorative and industrial coatings. One insider summed up the sentiment well: “With Dulux in the mix, JSW isn’t just expanding it’s rewriting the rules of who leads this market.”
Sajjan Jindal welcomed the acquisition with optimism, describing it as a moment that strengthens the company’s long-term ambitions. “India deserves world-class paints and coatings,” he said, adding that combining the reach of Dulux with JSW’s innovation creates “an incredible opportunity to build a more colourful future.”Parth Jindal echoed the emotion, calling the acquisition “historic” and highlighting its scale in the Indian market. He pointed to the blend of Dulux’s legacy and JSW Paints’ youthful brand philosophy as a powerful foundation for future growth.
From the seller’s side, AkzoNobel CEO Greg Poux-Guillaume framed the transition as mutually meaningful: “Today’s closing sharpens our strategic focus. We’re pleased to see the business transition to JSW, a strong and committed partner in a fast-growing region.”With the acquisition sealed, JSW Paints moves into a new league combining its modern, consumer-focused approach with the established strength of Akzo Nobel India’s portfolio. The deal also reflects rising momentum in the industry, with the paints and coatings market expected to expand significantly in the coming years.
