Mel Edwards to Retire as Global President of VML

Mel Edwards, the Global President of VML, has announced her decision to retire, concluding an illustrious 30-year career in advertising, including 13 years with WPP. In a heartfelt post on LinkedIn, Edwards shared, “Well, it’s official — the news is out that I’m retiring. I’ve decided to hang up my VML hat after 13 years at WPP and 30 years in the industry.” She clarified that her departure is part of a planned transition and that she will remain in her role for a few more months. “Between now and then, I’ll be handing over to my amazing friend and VML partner in crime, Jon Cook,” she added. VML expressed its gratitude in a statement, acknowledging her leadership and confirming that she will formally step down in Spring 2026. “Her legacy of client success, inclusion, and creative excellence will continue to inspire us for years to come. Here’s to the next chapter, Mel,” the agency said.

Over the years, Edwards has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern advertising landscape. She began her career at agencies like TBWA and M&C Saatchi’s LIDA, where she rose to the position of CEO. In 2012, she joined Wunderman as UK CEO, advancing to CEO for the EMEA region in 2015 and then Global CEO in 2018. After WPP merged Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R in 2023 to form VML, Edwards took on the role of Global President alongside Global CEO Jon Cook. Her tenure was marked by strategic integrations, the strengthening of client relationships, and the nurturing of a culture built on creativity and collaboration. Under her leadership, both Wunderman Thompson and VML earned multiple Cannes Lions and became known for blending brand strategy with customer experience on a global scale.

Edwards’ departure signifies the end of a defining era for WPP’s creative network. Her partnership with Cook guided VML through a major transformation following the merger, ensuring a smooth transition for global teams and clients. VML has since emerged as one of the world’s largest integrated marketing agencies. Reflecting on her journey, Edwards said she feels “proud to have been part of this amazing industry and to have worked with such amazing people,” adding that she leaves “with friends for life.” Her leadership has been celebrated for combining operational acumen with warmth and vision, making her one of advertising’s most respected figures.

Her retirement comes as VML continues expanding in high-growth regions, including India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. With Jon Cook leading the succession, industry observers anticipate stability and fresh leadership within the global network. Signing off on a personal note, Edwards wrote, “Here’s to the next chapter, but not before a good few glasses are raised in this one.” For countless colleagues and clients, that toast symbolizes both admiration and gratitude for a leader who helped redefine creativity at scale.
